This book is a field guide to the most common and conspicuous wildflowers found in the Adirondack area, but not restricted to it. Our purpose in presenting a regional guide is to make identification of the local flora easier and quicker for the non-botanist by including only those species which grow here.
Although all of the pictures were taken within the Adirondack Park, most of the same flowers can be found in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Many of them, except for a few high altitude plants, can also be found in the lowlands of New York and New England. The book, therefore, will be useful throughout all of the North Country as well as the surrounding countryside.
The descriptions and photographs in this book have been arranged very simply with flowers grouped first by color and then by time of bloom, from earliest to latest, within each color group. In the text this information is given in the upper right hand corner of each description, making it easy for you to quickly select the appropriate section where you are most likely to find your flower described.
You will find that the order of the descriptive material is uniform. Under the heading, which gives the common and botanical names for the plant and the family to which it belongs, the flower size and plant height are given. In the body of the text, the first paragraph describes the flower, the leaves, and other parts of the plant when significant. The second paragraph tells where the plant grows and may also include such information as the common names for it, comparisons with other species, and some remarks on its history or use.
